Program Spotlight: Maternity BVM/FXW

For ten years, the Frances Xavier Warde School (FXW) has partnered with Blessings in a Backpack to purchase, pack, and deliver food to students at Maternity B.V.M. School.

Each week, the youngest learners at FXW pack bags of food, and parents volunteer to distribute the bags to children who struggle with food insecurity. Maternity B.V.M. School has served Chicago’s Humboldt Park neighborhood for over 100 years.

Maternity B.V.M. program impact:

“At the end of the school year, we were dropping off the weekly bags of food for the weekend. As we were unloading the car in the parking lot, two alumni of the school happened to be visiting. They offered to assist carrying the food bags and recalled receiving these bags of food each Friday. It was something they clearly looked forward to each week during their time at Maternity B.V.M. They recalled how much they enjoyed the cereal and many times ate the crackers on the way home.”

“I work at the Frances Xavier Warde School. We have a unique program and our youngest learners commit to packing bags of food each week for the students at Maternity B.V.M. I feel that every donation reaches two populations… service learning and food insecurity awareness for the population at FXW as well as feeding 100% of the children at Maternity B.V.M. It is such a gift to assist children helping children each week!”

“My child being a beneficiary of Blessings in a Backpack makes me feel good that there are people who care for our children in cases where we as parents cannot. I am truly thankful.”
